Proverbs: Wisdom For Life
The key word for Proverbs is “wisdom.” There are several words in Hebrew for wisdom, but the main word is used 45 times (hokmah). In the O.T it was used to describe a “skill.” Someone who is a craftsman, sailor or accomplished worker was considered knowledgeable, experienced, and efficient in their area of expertise. They were considered skillful and therefore wise. So, in the spiritual realm, a person who possesses wisdom in reference to God, is one who is both knowledgeable and experienced in following God’s way. Biblical wisdom is the application of knowledge to life that makes one skillful in godly living. Having Gods’ wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7) and provides the ability to discern and live in a way that honors Him in the various aspects of life.
